A Day In The Life:

2021

"A Day In The Life" was the result of an assignment from my Electronic/Digital Illustration class. The project was centered around the idea of "what is something from a piece of music or literature that one can only imagine looks like?" while utilizing mock-ups. After hours upon hours of research, i.e. listening to music. I decided to base my project on The Beatles' song, "A Day In The Life," specifically what the main character's newspaper would look like.

While working on the project, I wanted to keep the piece true to the song's time and setting, 1960s London. That meant adopting a 60s-era newspaper as the main aesthetic. While researching the song, I found out that the main character's newspaper was heavily based on actual events, which I decided to also include in the final mock-up.

The tabloid starts with the headlining story "he blew his mind out in a car" and depicts a crime scene where a man commits suicide in the middle of traffic. The following article details the poor road conditions in Lancashire, England. Both of these stories were highlighted in "A Day In The Life". As the print continues, the text progressively gets more challenging to read and eventually becomes illegible, as reflected by the song's chaotic end.
